Graduation speakers

We are looking for graduating seniors to speak at the English Department’s Celebration of Graduates. The ceremony will take place at 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Friday, May 11, in the Elvehjem auditorium.
Your speech should offer a personal reflection on what was, is, or will be valuable to you about being an English major. It should be directed to fellow English graduates and their families and friends attending the ceremony. It should be no longer than four minutes (500-600 words).
Here are some possible prompts (you aren’t limited to these):

 Were there particular classes, experiences, or feelings of community or camaraderie that have been especially meaningful or transformative for you as an English major?
 Having been an English major, what gifts do you bring with you into the world?
 How has being an English major changed you?
 How has being an English major enabled you to enact positive change after graduating?
 What knowledge and strengths will you bring to your role as a member of the community and your own family?
 What values, skills, or dispositions (e.g., curiosity, empathy) has being an English major helped to cultivate, and how will you use them in your career or elsewhere?

The speech should be personal. It can be funny, inspirational, or confessional–whatever will best present your message.
Please send an abstract of your speech to Professor David Zimmerman at dazimmerman@wisc.edu and to Karen Redfield at: redfield@wisc.edu by April 20, 2018.

Send us your photos!

We show a very special video highlighting graduating seniors before and after the Celebration. Both students and their families enjoy this very much.
We need photos of you to make this happen! Were you in a club and have photos of yourself in club activities? Do you want to share photos of study abroad, your work, your hobbies, or you in a favorite campus or Madison spot? Did you do an open mic, march in the band, or participate in a sport? What would you, your family, and your friends like to see up on the big screen?
The photos should be high resolution jpg images. Avoid images that are cropped or zoomed-in. Camera phone images are perfect.
Send the photos to Karen Redfield by April 28th, 2018.
