Susan Stanford Friedman, 1943-2023

Susan Stanford Friedman, Virginia Woolf Professor Emerita of English and Women’s Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, died February 26th at her home in Madison at age 79. Professor Friedman was a trailblazing scholar in the fields of literary studies, gender studies, modernism, world literatures, and postcolonial studies, and authored four books over the span of her illustrious career. She was also known as a generous and dedicated teacher and adviser, mentoring countless undergraduate and graduate students in English and Gender and Women’s Studies. Professor Friedman was the former director of the Institute for Research in the Humanities and a founding member of the UW-Madison Women’s Studies Program.
