Since 2003, the UW Odyssey Project has offered free, credit-bearing humanities courses to low-income adult students from marginalized communities—including in four Wisconsin prisons. Writing is central to the program: from self-reflective essays and storytelling to blues lyrics and research editorials. This talk will explore how Odyssey’s writing-centered approach fosters voice, self-efficacy, and a passion for lifelong learning in students who have often been told they’re not “college material.”
Kevin Mullen, Assistant Professor of Continuing Studies and Director of Adult Education for the UW Odyssey Project
Jen Fandel, Director of Odyssey Beyond Bars
