Workshop: Universal Design for Learning (Inclusive Pedagogy)
April 17, 2019 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm
Facilitators: Brenna Swift & Angela Zito
Location: Multicultural Student Center Classroom, Red Gym (2nd floor)
In this workshop, we will consider how to create inclusive learning environments for students with disabilities, even in higher education contexts that continue to reflect hostility to their presence. We will start by discussing the barriers faced by students with disabilities, with a particular focus on stigma and ableism. We will also consider the differences between the “accommodations model,” which is limited to legally protected accommodations, and the more proactive vision for access advanced by advocates of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Throughout the workshop, we’ll provide information on how course instructors can facilitate accessibility through inclusive course policies, syllabi, classroom activities, and other aspects of course design. Participants are encouraged to come with any questions or course documents they would like to talk through.
