Workshop: Relatability: The New Empathy? (Inclusive Pedagogy)

“I relate to this character.” Chances are, you’ve probably heard some version of this phrase in your classrooms. But what does it actually mean for a student to claim “relatability” to some aspect of a text? Where do “relatability” and “empathy” overlap and diverge? What pedagogical possibilities or ethical conundrums do statements of “relatability” and “empathy” pose? In this workshop, we’ll discuss these questions within the framework of creating an inclusive classroom while considering their practical implications for crafting discussion questions and writing assignments. Some pre-circulated reading in advance required.
