Workshop: Bias, Fairness, & Emotion: Instructor and Student Identities (Inclusive Pedagogy)

This workshop unpacks the causes and effects of identities and emotion between instructors and students that may result in unfair grading, treatment, and general bias. We ask: When and how does sympathy affect grading? How do identity-based and political difference between instructors and students implicitly produce bias? Can the content of a course produce learning bias among students, and if so, how do we respond? We will share practical strategies for navigating bias in the classroom, in grading, and in course evaluations and for helping students critically self-reflect on these issues.
