Workshop: Alternative Assessment Practices (Inclusive Pedagogy)
April 16, 2019 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Facilitators: Aaron Vieth & Virginia Schwarz
Location: Multicultural Student Center Classroom, Red Gym (2nd floor)
The goal of this workshop is to introduce instructors to alternative assessment philosophies that resist traditional grading as the sum of letters, points, and percentages. During the discussion, participants will have the opportunity to voice their concerns about grading and learn strategies for improving evaluation and feedback. Presenters will also introduce grading contracts, an emerging assessment genre that is becoming more popular in English studies. The workshop will conclude as we collectively brainstorm ways we might (re)shape our assessment practices for equity and access. Participants will leave with a goodie bag of
handouts and resources, including sample grading contracts. This workshop is designed to be relevant for both literature and composition as well as a wide range of future teaching contexts.
