Reading Group: Ben Jonson’s “Masque of Blackness” (The Literature of Early Modernity and the Renaissance Reading Group)
September 19, 2019 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
The Literature of Early Modernity and the Renaissance Reading Group (LEAR) is pleased to announce that we will be meeting Thursday, September 19th at 4:00 PM in HCW 7190 to discuss Ben Jonson’s Masque of Blackness and Masque of Beauty in the context of early modern race. Both texts are available online through the Cambridge Edition of the Works of Ben Jonson Online, access to which is provided through the UW library. Perhaps most importantly, free coffee will be provided to all who attend.
We will be focusing primarily on the edited version of the 1605 manuscript of the Masque of Blackness. We encourage any who are interested to participate by bringing their own interests to our discussion, regardless of time period, methodology, or familiarity with the text being discussed.
If time permits we may also discuss the edited 1608 manuscript of Jonson’s Masque of Beauty. For those interested in some additional (entirely optional) textual context, David Lindley’s introduction to the Masques is also available.
For more details on accessing the texts, please contact Andrew Barrow (email@example.com) or Annemarie Lisko (firstname.lastname@example.org).
