Please note that we are closed for fiction submissions from May 1st to August 15th, and for non-fiction submissions from May 15th to August 1st. We would still love to read your work, so check back when submissions reopen for each! Poetry and Visual Arts submissions will remain open over the summer.
Please submit prose and poetry through our SUBMISSIONS MANAGER. We cannot, under any condition, accept email submissions.
Simultaneous submissions are welcome. If your work is accepted elsewhere, please let us know immediately. In fiction and nonfiction, where you will need to withdraw an entire submission, please do so through the submissions manager. If you must only withdraw part of your submission (as in one poem from a packet), please notify us through e-mail.
Please limit your submissions to two per calendar year. We do not accept previously published material, and we take First North American serial rights. Rights revert to the author upon publication, and we ask that we be acknowledged (as Devil's Lake) in future reprintings of the work. Please wait at least five months to query about a submission in progress.
Submit between three and five poems. Please use standard font and formatting (single-spaced, unless it's a stylistic choice). Please include your entire submission in one file, and be sure your name and contact information are included on each page.
All work must be uploaded through our submissions manager. We cannot, under any condition, consider e-mail submissions. Please submit all work in a Microsoft Word file (.doc) or a Rich Text file (.rtf) - please note we cannot accept .docx files. Send only one submission at a time, and wait for a response before you submit additional work.

We are interested in both fiction and nonfiction. All prose should be double-spaced, in standard formatting and font. In the interest of publishing work best suited to an online format, we will only consider pieces that are no longer than 4,500 words. If your submission is longer than 4,500 words, we will decline it unread. In this vein, we are also very interested in flash fiction, short shorts, collaborative pieces, and work that would not be possible on the printed page.

Paintings, drawings, photographs, and digital art are all accepted, as are submissions that combine text and visuals. Pieces whose focus is narrative will receive special attention. We define narrative pieces as those that are not merely aesthetic but which express a story. For one piece this story may be journalistic, another may be a diary comic, a third might be a series of images which together present a larger concept. Surprise us!
We will accept up to 5 submissions from one artist at a time. A series, or a comic, counts as a single submission. No series or comic should be longer than 15 pages. Images should be 300dpi and saved as either .jpeg or .pdf files.
